Welcoming LGBTQIA+ Workplaces Matters for Business

Updated: May 2, 2022

At CenterState CEO, the Racial Equity and Social Impact portfolio is dedicated to highlighting the significance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within workplaces and beyond.

Diversity and inclusion encompass representation from all backgrounds, experiences and identities. In honor of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) month, we are recognizing the importance of workplace equality and equity for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Did you know research shows more than 40% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people and almost 90% of transgender people have experienced employment discrimination, harassment or mistreatment? Why are these statistics so high? One reason is there are no federal laws that protect LGBTQIA+ employees from employment discrimination. This is unfortunate for the LGBTQIA+ community, but also is not a good look for businesses. A 2020 study by LGBT Diversity Show Me the Business Case found that the U.S. economy could save more than $9 billion annually if companies implemented effective policies for LGBTQIA+ staff.
